(In-house) Optical microscope

@ DES, HKU

Zeiss Microscope Axiolab 5

This microscope works well for conducting basic petrography observation (transmitted & reflected light) and acquiring high-quality images for publication.

(In-house) Electron Microprobe

@ DES, HKU

JEOL JXA-8230 SuperProbe

This electron microprobe works well for measuring elemental concentrations in minerals and volcanic glass/glass inclusions.

Scanning electron microscope (SEM)

@ EMU, HKU

The Hitachi S-3400N SEM works well for quick identification of different phases in rocks and observation of textures and zonation patterns via backscattered electron (BSE), X-ray and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging.

The SEM is run by the Electron Microprobe Unit of HKU which also houses other instruments such as TEM and FIB (more information at emunit.hku.hk)
